No, you won’t be charged if there’s an internal issue with LC Phone before the message is passed to the phone carrier. However, charges apply for every message once a delivery attempt is made, even if the message isn’t successfully delivered. This includes messages sent from toll-free and A2P numbers, as well as those blocked due to country restrictions or other factors. We recommend reviewing your message settings carefully before sending, as refunds for undelivered SMS won’t be provided.
If you’ve sent multiple SMS and noticed a higher bill than expected, don’t worry—this is common if you’re reviewing your SMS costs for the first time. Start by checking the "Steps to Estimating Outbound SMS Costs" section for a clear understanding of how standard SMS pricing works.
The most frequent reason for higher SMS costs is sending messages with multiple segments. SMS pricing is based on the number of segments in a message, so the more segments, the higher the cost. For example, if a message contains 5 segments, it will cost roughly 5 times the per-segment rate compared to a single-segment message.
To reduce costs, minimize the number of segments in your SMS. You can use the Segment Calculator—just paste your message, check the segment count, and edit it to lower the total number of segments.
Remember, several factors influence SMS pricing. While reducing segments and avoiding images or attachments helps, other factors may still affect costs. Review the "Factors Impacting SMS Cost" section for a full breakdown and tips on optimizing your SMS for better cost efficiency.
When sending SMS from a US/Canada number to another US/Canada number, standard rates apply. However, if you send a message to a number outside the US or Canada, you’ll be charged according to the recipient's country’s SMS pricing. For instance, sending a text from a US/Canada number to an Australian number will be billed based on Australian SMS rates.
You can check SMS rates for any country by adjusting the "Messages in" drop-down menu and selecting the destination country. This is covered in Step 2 above.
As an example, US/Canada per-segment rates may be $0.0079, whereas sending to Australia could cost $0.0515 per segment—roughly 6.5 times higher. International messaging can significantly increase your SMS costs.
In most cases, only the destination country’s pricing applies, but additional fees may sometimes be charged due to local regulations. To better understand these costs, sending a single test SMS to an international number is a helpful way to gauge the final pricing.
A segment is a portion of an SMS message used by carriers to send and calculate costs. Each SMS is divided into segments based on its length, with longer messages requiring multiple segments. Since charges are based on the number of segments, longer messages cost more. See What the Heck is a Segment by Twilio for a more in-depth explanation.
If you call someone and they do not pick up and you do not leave a voicemail - you are generally not charged for this call. Some restrictions may apply based on the outcome of the call and the type of call you are attempting.
